Lya Battle founded Territorio de Zaguates -- Territory of the Strays -- as a place where Costa Rica’s stray dogs (zaguate meaning ‘mutt’) can go to be loved. They now have close to 1300 dogs, many of them sick or considered conventionally ugly. Now the dogs can roam freely across the beautiful landscape and are looked after -- including veterinary care -- 24/7, so they’re never alone.
