These people, who are originally from central Asia, came here during the eighteenth century to look after reindeer. Here, in the coldest part of the Arctic, life is very hard. The only way to get water for nine months of the year is to melt ice from the frozen rivers. Outside it is absolutely freezing, with temperatures in the winter as low as -40ºC. Survival is only possible because of reindeer fur, which makes very warm clothing. This warm clothing is especially important for the children. But the Dolgan even use reindeer fur to insulate their huts as well. Community is very important to the Dolgan people. Everybody helps each other.
