The Film in the Film / Der Film im Film (1924) dir. Friedrich Porges
In this surviving fragment of Friedrich Porges’ film, we watch directors such as Fritz Lang and Robert Wiene at work. The focus here is on big-budget productions, crowd scenes, vast studios and the large crew of people literally standing behind the camera. A fascinating historical document which includes some very strange moments, such as when, during the shoot of Lang’s ‘Nibelungen’, an extra is reprimanded for still wearing his wristwatch.
