‘Literal highway robbery’: Police seize $87,000 from law-abiding citizen
A former Marine is suing Nevada highway patrol for seizing $87,000 in cash during a traffic stop. The money was taken for no reason other than suspicion of involvement in crime. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) retains his money to this day. In every US state except Minnesota, the burden of proof in cases of civil asset forfeiture lies on those from whom assets were confiscated.
