It reached #1 in Canada, #1 in West Germany, #1 in New Zealand, #1 in the US Billboard Hot 100, and #2 in the UK Singles Charts. “Downtown“ was written and produced by British songwriter Tony Hatch, who wrote most of Petula Clark’s material during the ’60s, including her follow-up hit, “I Know a Place“ (which also deals with city life). Hatch was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013. This song was Petula Clark’s first hit in the US, which was slow to discover her talents. In the UK, she was already a star as a singer and a television performer, regularly appearing on the BBC.
