The “Gnossiennes,“ are influenced by occultism and esotericism, which spread in France at the end of the 19th word appears to derive from gnosis. Satie was involved in gnostic sects and movements at the time that he began to compose the Gnossiennes.
The works are for the most part in free time (lacking time signatures or bar divisions) and highly experimental with form, rhythm and chordal structure.
These Gnossiennes were first published in Le Figaro musical No. 24 of September 1893.
