KV-1 vs UP-ARMOURED PANZER IV | BR-350B APHEBC vs 3-Layer Armour | Armour Penetration Simulation

The simulation presents the KV-1’s 76mm BR-350B projectile impacting the frontal armour of the @thetankmuseum’s up-armoured Panzer IV D, from 250m, with a side angle of 15°. Many Panzer III and IVs were up-armoured during the war, in a variety of different ways, with this one possibly being the most interesting. There are 2 separate applique plates added ontop of the main armour, with standoff between each of them. The first and second plate were measured to be 20mm and 30mm thick, respectively, with the main armour being 30mm thick. For the simulation, the 2 applique plates were assumed to be High Hardness Armour (HHA) with a hardness of ~400BHN (same as the applique armour on the Panzer III M), with the main Face Hardened Armour (FHA) having the front 5mm modelled as ~600BHN, with the bulk of the plate at ~350BHN (taken from US assessments of German FHA). The projectile was modelled with a progressive hardness upto the nose, ranging from 250BHN to 450BHN, with a relatively low UTS value.
