Old Bakers Carts Aka Renewing Bread Carriers (1957)

Chelsea, London. M/S of a van driving towards the camera. It stops and a man walks out. He opens a back door and shelves with different kinds of breads and pastries appear. Man fills up a basket and takes it away. This is a new vehicle which has put out of use an old baker’s cart - informs the voiceover. Only few have found their way into museums as vintage cars. Rest are just neglected for years. C/U shot of one of the old baker’s cart with great white wheels. C/U tilting shot across another cart, this in extremely bad condition. Nearly 400 of these carts owned by William Buchannan were left and forgotten at premises in Chelsea until artist David Rawnsley converted one into a garden ’caravan’ for his children. L/S of line of carts. An elderly man takes the first cart and pulls it inside what appears to be a workshop. Several M/S of Mr Rawnsley working on conversion of a cart. A little boy, presumably his son is sitting on the side watching him work. M/S of several people decorating colourful carts
