ABRSM PIANO 2021-2022 GRADE 6 : C1 Martha Mier - Opening Night Jazz ( Explore With JACKY) ❶MUSICAL CONTEXT The List C jazzy pieces are invariably popular, and this gem, suited to students with a strong sense of pulse and rhythm, will surely be no exception. While the music is a good exercise in playing swing, the LH in bars 17 and 18 (and similar) presents boogie-woogie patterns that can be imported into other jazz contexts. ❷TECHNICAL CHALLENGES The suggested metronome mark of = works well although a very slightly slower tempo is also viable. Given the need for a solid groove nearly all the way through, practising with a metronome is advisable. More fun would be to play along to a swing rhythm programme on a keyboard of, better still, duet work with a drum-kit player- which would further promote the rhythmic character.
