Made in 1982, “Traffic Trials: Heaven Won’t Wait“ was sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation, on the dangers of reckless driving. A study at the U. of Indiana has isolated 5 common errors that account for 95% of automobile accidents. These mistakes are so common that everyone is guilty of at least one. The film shows how to avoid these sometimes fatal errors.

Judge explains that people often don’t pay enough attention while driving (5:40). Judge finds defendant guilty of improper look out (5:53). Defendant is led away by angel (6:05). Next defendant is called; white man in black leather jacket stands up. (6:13). Judge says defendant is charged with excessive speeding; defendant denies wrongdoing (6:39). Flashback to man driving fast on windy road. Upbeat music playing (6:55). Possible 1970s-1980s Buick Muscle Car, swerving on Route 205 (7:11). Man crashes, footage of car crash, and aerial flip (7:20). Judge says that case is not unique (7:50). Footage of van driving down street (7:54). Car driving in snow (8:03). Car skidding out and crashing on ice (8:04). Man is found guilty of speeding and led away (8:20). Next defendant is called before court for distracted driving (8:40). Woman crying driving in car (9:02). Woman opens glove box and looking at map while driving (9:15). Woman crashes into car ahead (9:20). Animated drawing of rear-ending another car (9:40). Woman says she’ll never drive distracted again; she’s sent back with a warning (10:43). Sent back with a warning, wakes up in hospital bed (10:50). Narrator explains how people commit the same offenses repeatedly and frequently don’t treat driving as a serious business (11:16). Next defendant is called, he explains he is a hurry, and is a good driver (11:55). Judge agrees and footage of 1980s truck, possibly Jeep J10 (12:16). Man driving in car, woman in red track suit with German Shepherd runs across the road, man swerves and crashes (12:33). Man is found guilty of improper maintenance (13:00). Next defendant is called; he is charged with driving intoxicated (13:24). Men drinking beers at a bar, waitress bringing more drinks, beer poured from tap (13:55). Men exit from bar and get into car (14:00). Man driving drunk in car, swerving across road (14:15). Man runs red light and gets t-boned by another car (14:25). Is informed he will get off with a warning, wakes up in car (15:00). Is told to next time get a ride, footage of him getting into a brown Porsche 911 (15:08). Woman from the start of the film is called (15:25). Footage of her driving a convertible as judge says she is a good driver (15:50). She is told she is accused of not wearing a seatbelt (15:55). Footage of head on crash with a van (16:15). Woman is found guilt and led away (16:30). Court is recessed and guilty defendants are shown (16:55). Narrator challenges the viewer to compare their own driving to the cases shown (16:58). Footage is shown demonstrating proper behavior: look for traffic, maintain reasonable speed, stay alert, don’t drink and drive, maintain vehicles, and wear seatbelt (18:00).
