A Raccoon Mom With 2 Newborn Kits powered by

This camera is broadcast in partnership with @TexasBackyardWildlife A pregnant raccoon moved into one of our big owl boxes, 20 feet up in a live oak tree, in late April. She evicted a squirrel who had been happily ensconced there for a couple of months and had built a nest of twigs and cedar bark strips. Poor squirrel. The raccoon snoozed in the box during the day and ventured out at night to find food and water, and stretch her legs (the box is a tight fit for a biggish raccoon). On the morning of May 3rd, we noticed that she was restless and a little agitated, and at around 10:15 am she gave birth to her first kit. We’re not yet sure how many she has because she has pushed most of the squirrel’s bedding up close to the camera and it’s now very hard to see. We hope she will do some rearranging soon. She has been nursing her kits and keeping them clean, and they are squirming around as baby raccoons do. Their eyes are closed and their ears are folded back. They will be blind and completely helpless for their first couple of weeks. Mama raccoons are the most patient, devoted, caring mothers in the world. We are constantly amazed by them and we think that watching them is a joy. We hope you will agree with us. Love Animals and Nature?
