However, these photographs of the city go back to the beginning of the last century when the city was a well known industrial centre of the Russian Empire. Kursk had one of the largest breweries in Russia as well as engineering factories and sugar mills. Working conditions in the factories of Kursk were harsh and often resulted in strikes (for instance, from 1901-03 the workers at the sugar mill went on strike). Kursk workers participated in the general political strike during the 1905 Russian Revolution.........
