Kyoto Festival: Setsubun at Kitano Tenman-gū

Question: What would you do if an Ogre suddenly came into your house? Well here in Japan, you chase him out by throwing beans at him and yelling ’Good luck in! Devils out!’ Every year on February 3rd, Japan celebrates Setsubun no hi, a day where people (usually children) throw beans at a brave individual (usually the male head of the household) wearing an Ogre mask. What does this all mean? By throwing beans at the Ogre and chasing him out of the house, it means you’re driving away bad luck and any misfort
