Three giant pandas, long residents of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, are returning to their homeland in China after 23 years in the United States. China has been using pandas for diplomatic purposes since 1972 when its leader Mao Zedong promised two animals to the 37th US President Richard Nixon.
