The Storytellers: Мечеть Кул-Шариф (Казань)

The mosque, named after Imam Qolşärif, was originally built in the 16th century at the heart of the Khanate of Kazan. It was destroyed shortly afterward by Moscow prince Ivan the Terrible, who besieged the city, capturing it in 1552. The rebuild project commenced in 1996 and the new mosque, one of the largest in Europe, was inaugurated in 2005. Since then it has served as an important religious and educational hub and can accommodate up to 6,000 worshippers.
