Flow Induced Rotation (VAWT, 6DoF, AMI, Mesh Motion) ∇ OpenFOAM®

The following video demonstrates a flow-induced rotation by using the features of OpenFOAM® namely the arbitrary mesh interface (AMI) and the six degrees of freedom library (6DoF). The rotation is based on the pressure field at the blades that are a result of the fluid flow calculation. The pressure values at the blades are used to calculate the forces acting on the surface. Subsequent, the force is transformed into an angular momentum which turns the blades respectively. Brief analysis: The pressure field in the numerical simulation is unstable which could be related to the close boundaries or some other problems that I was not aware of in this particular topic. The velocity field (not shown here) shows the problematics of the interpolation discontinuities of the AMI boundary condition. As OpenFOAM is developed and improved continuously, the latest version might have better results. However, the flow-induced simulation is working stable and without any critical problems.
