Sutcliffe played bass guitar for the band during their early years and made important contributions to their image and artistic development. In 1959, Sutcliffe met John Lennon at the Liverpool College of Art, where they both studied. Lennon convinced Sutcliffe to join his band, which was then called The Quarrymen, as the bassist. Sutcliffe’s limited musical experience didn’t hinder his dedication, and he quickly became an integral part of the group’s evolving sound and image.
