Bastet the cat goddess in Ancient Egyptian Art

Bastet, or Bast, is a feline-headed or feline-bodied deity in Egyptian religion. Originally she, as a daughter of Ra, was viewed as one of the Egyptian pantheon’s most important protective goddesses. Bastet was represented as a woman with a cat’s head, wearing an elaborately ornamented dress and carrying an ancient percussion instrument called a sistrum and an aegis. Bastet was so popular that people from all cultures kept small figures of cats as protective amulets. She is still worshipped today and her protection is believed by some to be cast over modern cats.
