“Uncle Tom’s Cabin“ (1927) - Legendary, Complete Silent Film

March 20, 1852 - “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is published -- Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin“, is published and was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe in 1862, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.” Stowe was born in 1811, and while living in Cincinnati, Stowe encountered fugitive enslaved people and members of the Underground Railroad. Later, she wrote “Uncle Tom’s Cabin“ in reaction to recently tightened fugitive slave laws. Even though fictional, the book had a major influence on the way the American public viewed slavery. The 1927 film “Uncle Tom’s Cabin“ has no audible dialog, but it was released with a synchronized musical score with sound effects using the Western Electric sound-on-film process. In this version of the film, all of the major slave roles, with the exception of Uncle Tom himself, were portrayed by white actors in black face. Actress Mona Ray played the slave Topsy in blackface while the slaves Eliza, George, Cassie, and Harry were all presented as having very light skin coloring because of mixed-race heritage. It was first released on November 4, 1927.
