“Irish Johnny was a boxer, a bare knuckle specialist.
His record was second to none.
At the gym he’d train all day & at night he’d take his pay
to Barrows Pub to have a little fun.
Now Johnny had a temper when he got down in his pints
A rep for starting fights he could not win.
But when Barrow tossed him out, all the boys began to shout.
The riot started when the cops rushed in.
Big Brian’s 5 foot 2, but only when wearing shoes.
He’s always the first man in the fray.
Tatooed Joe’s a union worker, when he drinks he goes berserker
Destroying friends & foes in his way.
McBrain the local bookie, always out to make a buck
was giving Johnny odds ten to one.
Sweet Sue the barmaid yells, “go on boys & give ‘em hell
And be sure to clean this shit up when you’re done”
And it’s Hey! Nay! No!,
Irish Johnny wouldn’t go.
When the coppers tried to toss him in the brig
saying you can’t throw me out if I Aint done with my stout!
So come on & dance the Black & Blue Jig.
Smilin’ Dan loved his pints,
but he never liked to fight until
he took a chair upside the head.
Young Sully was a good lad,
with the courage of ten men
Just couldn’t understand a
word that he said.
Old Jerry was cold sober,
a genuine teetotaler,
God help the man that
made fun of his tea.
O’Neill began to grin,
when he saw the fight begin
a smile that betrayed his sanity
And it’s Hey! Nay! No!,
Irish Johnny wouldn’t go.
When the coppers tried to toss him in the brig
saying you can’t throw me out if I Aint done with my stout!
So come on & dance the Black & Blue Jig.
Sunday morning came
in a cold county cell
surrounded by the lowliest of men.
Some bruised & some cut,
& some heads a little rough
Some swore they’d never drink again.
Now when they looked around,
Johnny could not be found.
It seemed the bastard
somehow slipped away.
And they all swore after Mass,
that they’d all kick Johnny’s ass
For leaving them to fight another day.
And it’s Hey! Nay! No!,
Irish Johnny wouldn’t go.
When the coppers tried to toss him in the brig
saying you can’t throw me out if I Aint done with my stout!
So come on & dance the Black & Blue Jig.
