Sketching and drawing are foundational skills, whatever genre of painting you do. Learning to simplify and observe and translate this onto the paper are equally as important for abstract landscape painters as for those that paint loose or realistically; unless you are painting non-representational landscapes, there has to be some basis to abstract from, which is where sketching comes in. So for a few days, I will just be playing with pencil and using my artistic license to try to create a loose but interesting sketch as the basis of a painting in the future.
