Manga Entertainment Advertisement Promo circa 1998

This is a clip containing an anime preview advertisement compilation as put out by Manga Entertainment on their VHS tapes. This particular compilation is from the VHS tape “X, The Movie“ and is circa late 1998. The song being played is “Ultra“ by KMFDM. The highlighted Manga Entertainment titles include; - Ninja Scroll - Perfect Blue - Sword for Truth - Street Fighter II V - Blackjack - Macross Plus - Shadow Skill - Rayearth OVA - Vampire Wars - Fist of the North Star - X The Movie - Devilman - Giant Robo - Psychic Wars - Red Hawk - The Guyver - Ghost in the Shell The two highlighted feature film previews are; - Perfect Blue - X The Movie Essentially, Manga Entertainment effectively used the entirety of available preview space to show most all of their popular titles from their catalog. During 1998, Ghost in the Shell was a highly anticipated title to be released by Manga Entertainment, thus the longer preview spot. Manga Entertainment during the 90’s was well-known for bringing unique anime titles - primarily feature length movies - to the US market. Remember, this was during a time when DVD was not available. Additionally, there was no such thing as video streaming on the internet on a large and accessible scale. Thus, other than magazines and word-of-mouth, this was the only way for companies to preview their products to consumers. In comparison to other anime marketing companies of the time, this form of marketing was rather effective as Manga Entertainment was able to sell a lot of product, and to this day has survived as a western market distributor for anime products. Perfect Blue and X were shown in select US theaters in 1998 - a rather new phenomenon for anime. Anime had been shown in US theaters before, but these titles in particular helped to spur a beginning for more feature length anime titles to be shown in US theaters.
