HOW TO PAINT A SPRING TIME CARDINAL IN DOGWOODS- using oils/step by step with Suzanne Barrett Justis Aaaah, Spring time has arrived and in this time lapsed painting tutorial, I will show you how to paint a male cardinal in dogwoods. I will show you how I start out with a thin wash of paint and paint thinner, and wipe out the shape of the bird and flowers. I will proceed with blocking in the negative space around the wiped out shape and then block in the bird with cool alizarin crimson and hot cadmium red medium. I will discuss a little about color mixing , using warm and cool colors, and complimentary colors to create that “pop“ in a painting. The paints I used were primarily Michael Harding, Richeson Oils in the Shiva series and Windsor Newton Oil Paints, but I also used the Brown Pink by colors were, Brown Pink, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Med, Vermillion, Ivory Black, Sap Green, Ultramarine Blue, Kings Blue, Burnt Umber, Shiva Yellow Citron.
