An in Depth Discussion into the Newborn Great White Shark Video
In this video, we take a deeper look into our manuscript documenting what may be the first sighting of a freshly newborn shark on record.
Phill Sternes is a scientist from UC-Riverside and he was vital to the publishing of our paper and is a frequent contributor to my channel.
While it’s been largely reports as a 5 foot long white shark, that is the top and most conservative end of the shark’s size. We used a very thorough size measurement equation formulated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist James Worthington that utilized all data from the drones sensor and the comparison of pixels of a nearby pelican and sting ray in the footage.
You can read the corresponding research paper in the scientific journal, Environmental Biology of Fishes. The link is below.

While the shark is unique, we proposed a skin disorder could also be the explanation for the unique white coating that is sloughing off. However, this explanation does not take into account the unique sharks morphology. Specifically the round fins and most vital, the round dorsal fin. When compared to existing images of deceased neonates on record, the dorsal fin matches up precisely. Regardless, we found this shark to be scientifically relevant and agreed that an official record of it is vital for continued research into white sharks.

I’m NOT a marine biologist. As with all YouTube content, I encourage independent verification of facts via official scientific and trustworthy sources. I will strive to post citations for any information I discuss here whenever possible. My goal is to use photography and drones to bring awareness to wildlife and the nature around us. I welcome collaborations with scientists to bring cinematic elements to the educational presentation.
