In March 24th of the second year of Genryaku (1185) at six o’clock in the morning, the war boats of the Genji clan and Heike clan set sail for Dan-no-Ura 1 bay and by shooting their first arrows declare the outbreak of the war. 兵船もろとも三千余艘 平家の軍を囲まんと あせり競いて突き進む この一団ぞ義経の 麾下なりと知られける There are more than 3000 war boats of the Genji clan. They aim to surround the Heike clan and rush in haste. These troops are well-known for their great commander Yoshitsune 2. 平家の先陣は 九国一の強の者 山鹿の兵藤次秀遠の精兵 五百余艘 二陣は松浦党 三百余艘 平家の公達 二百余艘で 三陣に続きたり The Heike’s front line is formed by the troops of bravest warriors among the nine provinces 3. One of them is from Yamaga province with the commander Hyôdôji Hidetô, with elite warriors on more than 500 boats. The second line is formed by the troops of Matsuura clan 4 on more than 300 boats. The noblemen of Heike are on more than 200 boats, following as the third phalanx. 速潮にのる源氏の軍船 またたくうちに平家方の 真只中を突き破れば Genji’s war boats take advantage of the swift current of the sea and in an instant break through in the centre of the Heike troops. 敵も味方も入り乱れ さしもの瀬戸も船に覆われ 落葉浮かぶる川波の 網代に寄する如くなり Allies and foes are engaging in a melee, the broad Inland Sea are covered by boats, It is like fallen leaves on the ripples of a river caught by a bamboo wickerwork for river fishing. かかりける時 新中納言平知盛卿は 船の船首につっ立ち上がり 味方の兵ども承われ 一門の運命この一戦にあり 何の為にか命をば惜しむべき 戦さようせよ者共と 二度三度呼ばわったり It was at this moment new state-councillor (of the Heike), Lord Taira-no-Tomomori stands up on the prow of his ship. “Comrades, listen here!
