Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha Medium (Revisit) Australia Army Tank Museum. Japanese Tank.

The Australian Army Tank Museum at Puckapunyal, Victoria holds a collection of armored vehicles of interest to the School of Armour which trains personnel at this operational military base. This footage was shot on Sunday 30-Oct-2022 and is of the Type 97 Shinhoto (New Turret) Chi-Ha Medium Tank. I filmed this tank previously but returned to get more footage and add more information to the video. This version of the Type 97 sports an improved turret compared to the original Chi-Ha, that had a low velocity 57mm gun for infantry support. This variant was fitted with a 47mm anti-tank gun that showed its effectiveness against M3 Stuart Light Tanks when first employed in The Philippines in May 1942. It couldn’t deal with heavier allied tank later in the war, however, being incapable of penetrating the M4 Sherman from the front. It has a V12 Mitsubishi diesel engine, and was fitted with Type 97 machine guns mounted in a rear turret ball mount and in a hull ball mount. Armour was relative
