The Reason Styles Are Always Changing

The hairstyles of 2020 look nothing like what was popular in 2010. Why do styles change? Art historian Wilhelm Worringer suggested that the styles we find appealing are often a response to something we feel is lacking in society. For instance, after World War II, a world that had experienced so much chaos and destruction craved stability and reliability. This longing was reflected in the rise of mid-century modern furniture, known for its clean lines and simplistic design. It provided a sense of order and calmness in a world that was recovering from turmoil. The 1980s were characterized by bold, extravagant hairstyles, perhaps as a way to express freedom and individuality during a time of economic growth and relative peace.
