U.S. and Iran continue indirect confrontation raising concerns of escalation in Middle East conflict

As the Iran-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for attacking a Greek-owned Maltese-registered cargo ship in the Red Sea on Tuesday, the United States responded with a new strike against them in Yemen. It was the third by the U.S. military, and according to its Central Command, it destroyed four anti-ship ballistic missiles set to be launched at ships in the Red Sea. Since November, the Iran-backed rebels Houthis have been targeting commercial vessels they claim are linked to Israel, saying the attacks are in retaliation for Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East escalate further as Iran also launched attacks on Pakistan. Iran’s state media reports that two bases in Pakistan belonging to the armed group Jaish al-Adl, meaning “Army of Justice,“ were targeted. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, the attacks left two children dead and three injured. And, although Pakistan did not reveal the exact location of the attack, two security officials told the Associated Press that the strikes damaged a mosque located around fifty kilometers inside the border. On Monday, Iran launched missiles into northern Syria, targeting the Islamic State Militants, and fired missiles in the city of Erbil in Iraq, near the U.S. Consulate compound. Iran claimed it was at an Israeli “spy headquarters.“ One expert told Arirang News that attacks on neighboring countries are a long-standing strategy for Iran, using proxies to establish fronts externally and prevent direct involvement in the front lines. It is therefore looking to respond to recent conflicts and pressures without directly engaging with Israel and the United States. Given the ongoing use of proxy forces between Iran and the United States, concerns are growing about the potential for an even wider conflict.
