Execution of Anton Dostler German General who executed 15 American Soldiers by firing squad. Curt Bruns and Anton Dostler were the only two German officers to be shot by firing squads. He joined the German Army in 1910 and served as a junior officer during WWI. He commissioned into the new Reichswehr. He was promoted to Generalmajor and served as Chief of Staff of the 7th Army under command of General Friedrich Dollmann.  As part of Operation Ginny 2, 15 American Soldiers with aim to destroy a tunnel that would cut the line of communication to German forces in central Italy landed on the Italian Coast. The group was captured by Italian Fascist militiamen and German soldiers. Dostler order execution of 15 American soldiers. According to Dostler’s adjutant, Dostler’s superior Field Marshal Kesselring ordered the execution. On 26 March 1944, the 15 Americans were executed by firing squad. Their bodies were buried in a mass grave. Dostler was arrested by the US Army and tried before the US military tribunal. He was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to death. on 1st December 1945, General Dostler was executed by a firing squad . At age 54. He is buried on the war cemetery of Pomezia, Italy.
