On this day in 1960, a series of earthquakes hit Chile, including the largest recorded earthquake of the 20th Century. Here is a British Movietone report covering the aftermath of the disaster. The Pacific port on Concepcion in Chile has suffered the worst series of earthquakes in all its history. Details of the damage cannot reveal the extent of the disaster, in which the mounting death roll soars into thousands with hundreds of thousands homeless. The repercussions of the disaster in Chile spread far and wide across the Pacific Ocean. Here, at Hilo in Hawaii, some 7,000 miles away, lives were lost and great damage is done, when a tidal wave struck. Australia, New Zealand and Japan were also hit by the wave.
