The Ka-50 derives from the V-80Sh-1 prototype, an evolution studied in 1975 of the V-60, in turn an armed helicopter project based on the civilian Ka-26 of the sixties. On the order of the Council of Ministers of the then Soviet Union, on 14 December 1987 the creation of a first copy was authorized and after a series of evaluation tests on flight performance and on-board systems, the Soviet government ordered a first batch of helicopters in 1990.
