‘Between Blue’ by Anthony Vine (winner Gaudeamus Award 2016)

Gaudeamus presents the latest works by young music pioneers: ‘Between Blue’ by Anthony Vine performed by Quatuor Bozzini. Recorded live at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, 8 September 2016. --- Anthony Vine’s Between Blue premiered during Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2016. The title hints at Gard Blue, a light installation created by US artist James Turrell. But there is also “Out of Blue / A Letter From Home About Sound and Consciousness,” which is a song on the album Out of Blue by pianist “Blue” Gene Tyranny, also known as Robert Sheff who played with Iggy Pop and the Stooges under his own name in 1973. But what attracted Vine’s attention the most was “Blue” Gene Tyranny’s work with Robert Ashley, the 20th century opera innovator. One of Tyranny’s quotes, printed on the score, reveals why Vine’s string quartet is divided into four sections: i “Sometimes I put my fingers on the top of my eyes and apply pressure slightly.” ii “Then the pressure is released...” iii “...and flashes of light still remain floating...” iv “...
