Devastating Argentine attack at Fitzroy (Falklands 1982)

On 8 June 1982, two companies of the Welsh Guards Battalion were sent aboard RFA Sir Galahad from San Carlos to Fitzroy in order to join the first two companies unloaded on the previous night at Bluff Cove, just to the north. Poor coordination and other problems led to a delay and the Welsh Guards were still onboard the ship at about 2PM. Having been spotted by Argentine observers, they soon became the target for a flight of FAA’s A-4 Skyhawks. The attack resulted in the biggest lost of lie for the British in the entire Falklands War.
