Хохлатая или красноногая кариама или сериема/Seriema red legged seriema

This “highlight reel“ is of a modern-day raptor, the red-legged seriema (Cariama cristata), demonstrating how it feeds on vertebrates in the wild. Seriema have “killing claws“ like those on Velociraptor and other maniraptoran theropod dinosaurs. For a paper we have submitted for publication we wanted to see how seriema actually use these “killing claws“. During our studies, we observed the seriema repeatedly demonstrate how it dispatches vertebrates in the wild. Though a big fan of insects, it will eat snakes, mice, and other vertebrates. It grabs them with its hooked beak, leans its head way back, then violently smashes prey into the ground. Afterwhich it stomps with its feet and uses its “killing claws“ to steer and manipulate its prey. Seriema are my new favorite theropod. They do everything with gusto, including sing (they lean their head back and belt out the tunes), run (very fast and maneuverable), and fly (powerful wing flaps). Thank
