Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!
Happy Saint David’s Day!
Did you know that Saint David is the patron saint of Wales, and March 1st is Saint David’s Day?
Saint David, or Dewi Sant, lived in the 6th century, was born to Welsh royalty, is believed to have performed miracles, and to have died on March 1, 589, which is why today is his day.
These days, St. David’s Day is celebrated with a daffodil and a leek, for some very curious reasons. Legend says the leek was worn on soldiers’ helmets in ancient battle against the Saxons, to identify themselves. As far as the daffodil tradition, that is thought to be simply to mark the beginnings of Spring. (Plus, it smells a lot better to wear a daffodil vs. a leek).
We were lucky enough to film in the town named for him: St. Davids (no apostrophe, don’t ask), which also happens to be the smallest town in all of Britain.
There, we visited St. David’s Cathedral, which is where Saint David is buried, and was built on the site of his original monastery.
