New Fusion Energy Record Pulse from JET DTE3 campaign - Pulse #104522

On 3 October 2023, EUROfusion researchers at the Joint European Torus (JET) set a new world record for most fusion energy released in a single ’pulse’: 69 megajoules in a 6-second long pulse. Fusing only 0.2 milligrams of fusion fuel, this released about the same energy as burning ten times as much fossil fuel, but without any greenhouse emissions. Setting this record wasn’t even the main goal of the experiments at JET. By getting as close as they could to the conditions in future fusion machines and power plants, JET showed how to operate those machines safely and efficiently. By controlling the plasma core, steadying the edge of the plasma and feathering the intense exhaust, they showed how to operate the future machines that will show how to deliver fusion power to the grid.
