All The Things You Are is bad (for jazz beginners)
All The Things You Are is an awesome jazz standard, and a stable of the modern repertoire - but it tends to be taught to beginners to jazz far earlier than it should, in my honest opinion. The short version is that it’s actually a pretty tricky song to improvise over because it modulates so often.
I have no idea if this is a hot take or not, because I’ve had conversations with people that completely agree with me, but I can also see people getting really angry with me on the internet. Who knows, here goes.
I’m Tim Beau Bennett, and I’m making videos about jazz history. Sometimes I talk about jazz musicians, sometimes the songs, and sometimes about genres. I play jazz guitar, though I would call myself a keen amateur, rather than a professional. These videos are a work in progress, but there are many more to come - so please subscribe and let me know what you’d like to see in the comments!
