Mahdî Brecq - Tolkien’s Gothic: A Poetic Resurgence

Lecture given at the Tolkien Society Seminar (Leeds) on 03 July 2022 ’Tolkien and the Gothic’. Link: The presentation will study the neo-gothic poem ’Bagme bloma’ (Flower of the Trees) and show how Tolkien, through this poetic creation, reconnects with a ’lost Gothic’ poetry, thanks to the use of alliteration (common to all early Germanic poetry) and the ’figura etymologica’.
