The story of the creation of the State of Israel is extremely complicated, but it is easier to understand through the life story of a single person. The name David Ben Gurion may not be among the most famous names that come to mind when listing the greatest figures in history, but wrongly so. For his life is a perfect representation of the dramatic fate of the Jewish people in the 20th century, culminating in the establishment of the independent state of Israel in 1948, to which Ben Gurion deserves enormous credit. He is also still referred to here as the ‚Israel’s Father‘. The first prime minister played the great diplomatic game with all the powers of the war and post-war era, was behind the creation of the dreaded Israeli army, and helped build the Mossad secret service. And yet he was one of the shortest leaders in history (only 152 cm), who fought wars at home with his wife, and went as far as he could to the Negev desert in the south of the country, where this living legend lived in the squalid conditions of a dingy bungalow and dug in the sand to help make the desert fertile.
