Your skin is your integumentary system. It includes skin, nails, hair, glands, and nerves. Your integumentary system protects you against microorganisms, infection, injury, and sunlight. It helps regulate body temperature and senses heat and cold. Skin is your body’s largest and heaviest organ. It weighs six pounds (or more) and is 2 millimeters thick – thinner on sensitive parts like eyelids and larger on stress-prone areas like feet. Your skin has 19 million cells per inch. In each layer of your skin, nerves perceive various sensations. Top skin layer is epidermis. Visible and touchable skin. It has melanocytes, keratinocytes, and Langerhans cells. It colors and waterproofs skin. Skin’s second layer is dermis which thickest layer. Sweat, oil, and hair follicles are present there. The skin’s Innermost layer is hypodermis layer.
