Cat’s Cradle. Liz Hughes. 1991. Experimental. Silent.

Format: 16mm / Sound: Mono / Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Dad, clad only in his underclothes, lies stiffening on the kitchen table. Once dressed, he begins his last journey to join us, the mesmerized audience, in the dark flicker of the cinema. ‘Cat’s Cradle’ employs an engaging surrealist storytelling style and embraces a markedly Australian form of ‘gallows’ humour. The film is distinct for its exclusion of dialogue and its clear visual nod to a silent film/depression era aesthetic - an aesthetic which is ironically sprinkled with more contemporary technology. This film had extraordinary success on the local and international film festival circuit, screening at over 50 festivals and winning ten awards. Liz Hughes has directed documentary films, children’s television, music videos and worked at the contemporary media arts organisation, Experimenta. Her work has been screened in over 130 film festivals, sold to numerous TV stations and won 21 international awards. For more informa
