Номинация «Туристические возможности региона» Shakhunya is a small, cosy town which is located in the very north of Nizhny Novgorod region. It was founded as a railway builders’ settlement of Nizhny Novgorod-Kotelnich in 1921. The population now is 23 000 people. During the Great Patriotic war the value of Shakhunya increased. The settlement was given the status of a town in October 21, 1943. New enterprises of woodworking, food industry, as well as an Art factory (producing sewing, woven products, etc.) were opened. Immediately after the war, the town became a major industrial and commercial center in the north of the region. In the 1970s Shahunya became a town of new buildings. A plant for the production of skimmed milk powder with a workshop of butter and dairy products was founded on the outskirts of Shakhunya. The products of this plant entered the world market and were sold in the Netherlands, Poland and Afghanistan. The town is known for its railway station and the railway bridge
