110KG | 1984 | Friendship Cup (Varna, BUL) | Taranenko vs. Zakharevich

The ninth session of 1984’s Friendship Cup; the 110kg’s category. Weightlifting at the Friendship Games was contested at the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria between 12 and 16 September 1984. 80 athletes competed in 10 events. World records were broken thirty times during the competition. “The main battle in the 110kg class was between three soviet and two bulgarian athletes. Leonid Taranenko and Yury Zakharevich competed for team USSR. Valery Kravchuk lifted as a guest. Bulgaria was represented by Yanko Georgiev and Veselin Osikovsky lifted as a guest. The first world record was set in the snatch by Zakharevich (197,5kg). Taranenko replied with the record snatch of 200kg. In the 4th attempt, Zakharevich raised the world record to 200,5kg. Bulgarian Georgiev ended with the 182,5 snatch. In the clean & jerk, both soviet athletes opened with 230kg. Then Taranenko jerked 242,5kg. Zakharevich skipped 242,5kg and went for 245kg. He failed in both attempts. Possibly, he didn’t completely psychologically recovered from the recent elbow surgery. The results were Taranenko - 442,5kg (world record), Zakharevich - 427,5kg, Georgiev - 412,5kg.“ /based on: Timing, results are below.
