On this day in 1945, the firebombing of Tokyo was concluded where more than 16 square miles in and around the capital were incinerated. Here is a British Movieton report showing the bombing of Tokyo. Formations of B29s in flight, flak bursts around them, Superforts over Tokyo, bombs falling, through clouds, few hits can be seen registering. Nakajima Aircraft Plant is the target. Back on Saipan, burning B29s, several having been hit by Jap bombing. American bulldozers clear debris, while fires still burn furiously. Jap plane crashes to earth (don’t see it hit ground). Finish on planes burning. There were cut-ins of map of the Pacific, showing distance from Saipan (in the Marianas to Japan).From their base at Saipan American Superfortresses have been making the trip of 1,500 miles to bomb Tokyo.
