Who Said Disabled? (1961)

Titles read: “STOKE MANDEVILLE - WHO SAID DISABLED?“. Buckinghamshire. General view of people walking under an arch reading Stoke Mandeville Games (probably grounds of Stoke Mandeville Hospital). The British Sports Association for the Disabled are holding their first Sports Week. Various shots of the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association (BLESMA) playing skittles while a crowd of people watch. The players have only one arm or one leg (and sit in wheelchairs). A man throws a club in a field. We then see a basketball game in progress. The Earl of Ancaster (President of BLESMA) and Minister of Health Enoch Powell watch the game. Some players have only one arm; the others presumably have artificial legs. The players fight for the ball; a man with one leg picks it up and shoots but misses. Another player shoots and scores. The ball is stuck in the net until a one-armed man knocks it free. Notes on file. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRIT
