In this history timeline we well see how popular the different data formats were over time. The figure in dollar is the inflation adjusted revenue at that time. The dominant medium in 1977 was 8-Track, shortly after Vinyl (LP) took the dominant spot. In 1985 the Cassette was the most popular medium, after which the CD (Compact Disk) took over for over two decades. In more recent years digital downloads, ringtone downloads and streaming services have become dominant forces in the industry.
