Wildfires in Siberia: my hometown Yakutia is on fire...

I grew up in Yakutia, the coldest place on Earth where the temperature is going down to -60 degrees by C. It’s located in the zone of continuous permafrost and more than 40% of the territory is located above the Arctic Circle. This summer the extraordinary forest fires, which have already burned through hectares of land in my hometown, have released an “airpocalypse” of thick toxic smoke which my family is choking every day. The wildfires are part of a vicious climate cycle. Not only is climate change stoking the fires, but their burning releases even more carbon into the atmosphere, which worsens the crisis. Wildfires in Yakutia have been releasing record amounts of greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming.
