A severe winter storm has slammed into the northern United States, closing interstate highways from Arizona to Wyoming and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Few places were spared the wild weather, including at the opposite extremes, with long-standing records broken in cities across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. According to , about 280,000 properties nationwide were without power, nearly half of them in Michigan, where snow, sleet and freezing rain iced power lines, leaving them vulnerable to wind gusts. The winter mix has hit the northern US hard, closing schools and offices, even shutting down the Minnesota Legislature. The journey was difficult.
