In January 1946, a group of German soldiers were led out into a public square in Leningrad for their executions on a huge gallows. 8 German soldiers in total were executed that day, but they had committed horrific crimes following the launching of Operation Barbarossa. Amongst the condemned was a German General and each of the other men had been accused of terrible crimes inside of Soviet lands. They were all accused of executing Soviet civilians and people, and they were also involved in burning villages to the ground. There were a huge number of war crimes completed by the German army following the Invasion of the Soviet Union and Stalin would punish these 8 German soldiers inside of a city which was brutally treated during the war. The Siege of Leningrad became the deadliest siege in history, and the city was ruined but there was some form of revenge for those civilians who witnessed the executions that day.
