Behind-Scene of the iconic China-built Lusail Stadium, the main venue for 2022 World Cup, Qatar

The Lusail Stadium is the centerpiece of the 2022 World Cup. The arena can accommodate more than 80,000 fans and was designed to resemble a traditional Arab bowl. The venue was built as a joint venture with the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC). Wang Lei is the Managing Director of CRCC in the Middle East. He says it was an emotional moment to see World Cup fans inside the stadium. Lusail is the first FIFA World Cup stadium built by a Chinese company. Wang Lei says a key focus was on environmentally-friendly building practices, that included a design change that reduced the amount of steel used by 12,000 tons. Water conservation was a priority too, for Qatar’s desert environment. Long term, there are plans to it convert the arena into a community space to include a health clinic, a school and sporting facilities. But for now, this is an iconic venue for World Cup 2022. And already, it is providing some memorable World Cup moments.
